ECOMIG forces in the Gambia have detained a Gambian soldier, who was suspected to be planning to assassinate President Adama Barrow, Freedom Radio Gambia, has learnt. The arrested soldier has been identified as one Baboucarr Njie. He was said to have concealed a pistol while attending a Friday prayers at a mosque in Banjul, where President Adama Barrow, was in attendance.
The solider was arrested without an incident. He is currently helping the ECOMIG forces with their investigations.
It is not clear if Mr. Njie, was legally authorized to carry a firearm while on off duty. Sources said Njie’s arrest attracted curious onlookers at the mosque. He was immediately taken into custody. There is no word as to where he is detained.
President Barrow is being protected by the ECOMIG Forces. The ECOMIG forces together with their Gambian security counterparts are yet to issue a statement about the arrest of Mr. Njie.
During Jammeh’s rule, some of the personnel of the Presidential Guards and the military police were allowed to be armed while on off duty. The Jammeh constituted assassin team–known as the jungullars also used to be armed.
