The airport in Banjul is overcrowded with western tourists, who are fleeing the West African country, following reports of an ECOWAS invasion. Dictator Yahya Jammeh is refusing to step down from power. He says he will not step down until his pending election petition is determined by the supreme court.
Over one thousand tourists mainly from the UK are leaving. Western governments have issued a travel advice for their nationals not to visit the Gambia at this time.
On the home front, thousands of Gambians are also fleeing the country. There has been an influx of Gambian refugees to Senegal. Some of the refugees have been hosted along the border.
